El Loco’s Pro Commercial/Music Video Tournament

By
Updated: March 21, 2011

With the tournament more than underway and the sweet sixteen fast approaching, it seems best to introduce El Loco’s  Pro Commercial/Music Video Tournament. The winner will be crowned with…I don’t know yet. I’ll figure that out. Glory. Yes Glory. Glory like cheese on the mac.

Sorry–I am still drunk on exhiliration. March Madness=this peculiar look. A look like m’ gonna kill you, but I don’t got the balls to do so. Moorhead State beating you Mr. Pitino is enough to make the Louisville fans tar and feather you, with the school band backing the proceeding with a celebratory Dixieland rhythm. Seeing a snake like Rick Pitino curl up and freeze white as a ghost, was worth every bit of the unhealthy adrenaline shooting through my veins.

The selection committee today is a one man show: me. If you feel I left out a worthy opponent for the tournament then message me below. Just remember that we here at fansmanship.com are school grade friendly and will prosecute you if you speak crudely or in an unkind jest (lol).

Day One (Selection Monday @ 8:30 AM, Play-in Game @ 5:00 PM)

Day Two (First eight to be played on fansmanship.com Thursday, March 24th, 2011)

Eight are: 2 v 15, 4 v 13, 6 v 11, 8 v 9

Day Three (Second eight to be played on fansmanship.com Friday, March 25th, 2011)

Eight are: 1 v 16, 3 v 14, 5 v 12, 7 v 10

Championship (Played on Monday, March 28th, 2011)

As today is selection Monday, Loco has been buried away in his study looking at sol: strength of laughter, cop: cheese of production, sp: staying power. Bear in mind that before I introduce the seeds 1 to 16, that I am humbled by this process and hope when it is all said and done, you will be inspired by the things you are about to witness.

Format: 1 v 16 will play winner of 8 v 9. 2 v 15 will play winner of 7 v 10. 3 v 14 will play winner of 6 v 11. 4 v 13 will play winner of 5 v 12.

Please remember to voice yourself on the thread below, because your opinions can help sway a commercial/song to victory in the tournament. This is your time to make a case for your favorites.

While Grandmama created a lot of buzz, the 85 Bears and the SB shuffle is going to be tough for any of these videos to beat. Easy win here. Be like Mike has a good shot to take down the 85 Bears in the later rounds. It is seemingly a commercial of an entire generation. As for LeBron, What should you do? How about you quit talking and looking for sympathy, and just PLAY BASKETBALL. What should you do - that's funny. SHUT UP AND PLAY! How about that. This one isn't even close to top 16. Why is this commercial ranked higher than Grandmama? It's just LeBron's weak psyche looking for sympathy. That's not a commercial. Easy 2 seed win. Speaking of not belonging in the top 16, a commerical with Godzilla footage followed by Barkley dribbling a ball for 2 seconds and not saying a word? Penny and Chris Rock blow it out of the water. Magic and Bird have to squeak by Kobe and LeBron, simply because they were actually rivals. Kobe and LeBron aren't 'on-the-court' rivals or nemisis like Magic and Bird were. Kobe and Lebron have yet to match up in the finals even once. I remember a Magic interview where he was talking about Bird and said that particular commercial you have was in fact shot at Bird's house in French Lick. So when they caption "French Lick, Indiana," it acutally was French Lick, Indiana. Magic spent the whole day there getting to know his respected rival. Great commercial with a story behind it. I vote no upset. The first dude that raps looks like an angry Carmelo Anthony. That being said, this song had a bit of staying power for its time and place. That is commendable. I know the kid is cute and all, but a George Brett commercial about 7up that lacks creativity or any form of writing or production? The commercial is just the cute kid and nothing more. Shaq dunks the kid and brings down the backboard. Even though Pete sells the Velva well and definately got him some that night, i'll take the creativity of a commercial like Mike v Mike over a degenerate gambler hocking aftershave anyday. I love Magic and that was a reasonable commercial for its time, but 'have a coke and a smile?' Comon! Legendary! That that particular Joe Green commercial has to be one of the all-time greats for that era. I think Broadway Joe did a Nair commercial or something that was also pretty funny and controversial for the time. I vote 10 over 7 in the upset. I always used to wonder if that actually was Cory Blount (#43 in gold) in that frozen-time commercial. Its a great short that is semi-creative, but I think Bob and his Miller Lite squeak by here. Beer commercials are inherently a funny party, which I can relate more to. Upset, 9 over 8 is my vote. Can't wait for round 2!

Yea, Pete Rose and Aqua Velva is very underrated in this listing. Nobody is very keen on its brilliance. I love the way he has the hots for the girl the whole time she is interviewing him. I also love how MJ slaps the kid's butt in the 2nd clip of commercial #2. Very comical.

Pete Rose is pure gold. Hall of fame...oops... But then again The Super Bowl Shuffle holds a special place in my heart. Sorry Chicago, but I think Pete has this one.

I jsut have to say that the MJ vs MJ is the ultimate. It's pretty much every grown mans child fanatsy to see older MJ vs young MJ...besides having young MJ vs. Kobe or LeBron. It's the ultimate match up. No comparinson.

Uecker and MJ Frozen Moment are tied. MJ's frozen moment is a beautiful commercial in every way. Uecker though...come on. Like Jesus with white skin and a curly fro.

13 over 4 upset right now. I want to give Bird and Magic props, but the muppet Bron and Kobe commercial is spot on when it comes to their pesonalities. I also think it has proven its staying power, and is very very comedic.

Grandma Ma takes that 10 point lead and BLOWS IT OUT IN THE SECOND HALF! Grandma Ma NO CONTEST! Jordan and his Hanes don't stand a chance. Remember all the buzz the Grandma Ma campaign had around it? Everyone was talking about it. Did we ever once say, "hey did you see the lame-ass Jordan Hanes commercial last night during the game?" Hell no. Grandma Ma by 25 in a laugher!

No way the LeBron Rise commercial should have been included. Payton Manning or the Manning Bro's kicking each other in the hallway are both better....

Grandmama dunking is the one. MJ has a lot of commercials and while his commercial has the weirdness factor, Grandmama has the awesomeness factor. Grandmama also has the chance of taking out a one seed cuz of his/her domination. The dress is amazing and the gold tooth is the icing on the cake...

I love you Loco, but what criteria did you use to select the opponents in the bracket? It seems to be your own personal preference as majority of the commercials are of Michael Jordan... That's a shocker! LOL... And most of these I have never seen in my lifetime nor are they even really that good to me... I feel there are a lot more recent (Last 10 years) pro commercials you left out that are far more entertaining than these... I can provide some examples if you like, but first I would like to know your selection criteria. If I was to pick one out of this selection it would be the Kobe/Lebron Puppet commercial. There were quite a few of these and most were pretty funny. I like how they portray both players personalities in a humorous manner. I'm a little hurt that Kobe didn't get more love like the commercial where he jumped over the Aston Martin or the one where he played the little kid 1 on 1 and absolutely destroyed him hahahahaha! And then there was a more recent Nike commercial that highlighted several NBA stars and at the end Kobe hits the game winner and the Staple Center goes absolutely nuts! And just so you don't think I'm biased, what about any of the Peyton Manning commercials or the Reggie White Zest commercial... I guess you can't have them all, but I feel there should have been more variety and not every other one been MJ as great as he was. Much love and luck to the contenders! Cuz Del Loco

I would say #2 "Be like Mike" would be my vote as it is an icon in advertising that influenced pop culture for years. I remember singing that as a kid. A close second would be Mean Green's commercial which was big in an earlier generation than mine but also an iconic commercial in the year it came out. Thanks for doing this I love the #1 commercial its hilarious and one I have never seen before. Great marketing at work here keep it up.

Ok, I think first we need to ask ourselves what we are looking for here...if you are asking the 6 month pregnant lady in me her favorite then it's the Jordan Frozen. The tender looks on the kids faces waiting to see what's going to happen steals my heart. Then again, if you are asking the smartapple in me Bob Uekel gets it for calling himself out and saying he was not the best. Then there is also the greatest post ending..George Brett 7-Up...at the end of the commercial it says solar plane and super chicken...makes me want to know more about this supposed Super Chicken and why I do not have one!!! PS...if Jordan ever goes for the priesthood reget that...he was smiling when he grabbed that little tykes rear end.

I am feeling a 13 over 4 upset right now. Though I think that famous Bird v Magic commercial is brilliant, the puppets of Bron and Kobe is pretty damn funny.

Can someone tell me why MJ was never prosecuted for inappropriate behavior with Children. Clip two in the two seeded Gatorade Commercial, has a full of clip of MJ slapping a little child's butt. No joke. Check it out.

Fans remember that the play-in will be decided today at five. Your opinions mean more than mine, though it will be a blend between the two. Also..don't forget to give me your opinions on the seedings. Give me your favorites and why...and I will take all into account as the tournament gets underway. Most importantly, have a laugh. Loco

Difficult job my friend, very very difficult. I tried and like all selection committees failed a bit. But it is what it is. I am leaning toward Gradnma Ma right now too. Let's say Grandma Ma is up ten at half time right now.

Luke Johnson
Luke Johnson

Thank Cuz Del Loco. Can I say that this selection was REALLY hard? Not only because there are so man athletes and so many commercials, but because, our readers vary from a child of the 60's to a child of the 90's. I tried to stretch it out. I am approaching these from a humorist perspective, though I did select a few serious ones. Some I selected because they are so damn cheesy. Other gave me chills, i.e. MJ's froze moment commercial. I also wanted to give people NBA, NFL, and MLB, which was REALLY hard again. And...I ranked the Chicago Bears Super Bowl Shuffle because that is spot on hilarious. MJ ranks below and has a few others because growing up he was and still is the most marketed athlete to ever grace the planet. Lastly, this is all for laughs. Whether you remember some of these (I remembered all of them), take a gander and enjoy. Vote on the play-in round and push for the ones you like the most. Thanks cuzo.

Thanks Dustin. I still need some ideas for the play-in. As of now, the Hanes is pretty gross and Grandma Ma pretty funny.

That is supposed to say "REGECT" if Jordan goes for the priesthood.

And Grandma Ma is looking good too. Common let me know fans!

That is my pick too matt. MJ vs. Himself was the most purely awesome of the selection. "Like mike is possibly the most memorable spot from the 80s. That jingle stayed in my head for 20 years! But face it, Jordan vs himself is the showdown of the century. What about Bo Jackson? He had some good ones

Luke Johnson
Luke Johnson

What about the play-in? Give me more. Look at a couple of the matchups and tell me which one should win and why. I like that one too.

owenmain
owenmain

But did you watch those videos? They are all classics in their own right. Maybe I'll post something on Wed. that is the sad, left-out videos....

Luke Johnson
Luke Johnson

Also, Kobe jumping over the Aston Martin was under consideration but in the end, it was boring. No doubt, the best rep for him and Bron is their muppet commercial.

owenmain
owenmain

OOOOOOh, - I think he's got a point with the Payton Manning commercials - TAKE A HIKE- I think I will... etc... Those were bad ass.

Luke Johnson
Luke Johnson

LOL. Yea pretty weird. His dad holding up red high cut briefs and then Ms. Jordan giving off the sexual vibe. Good pick. Grandma Ma was pretty solid too. Nothing like a beefy man dressed up as an old woman. It inspired only the greatest.
