Cal Poly baseball (16-19, 3-6) will host defending Big West champs Long Beach State this weekend at Baggett Stadium. After a renovation to the seating/bleacher area, the game will be the first television game in the new stadium. The 7pm game will be televised nationally on ESPNU.

While the new bleachers are beautiful and bigger and steeper than many imagined, Baggett Stadium hasn’t been full yet with the new seating. The team, which hasn’t made a regional appearance since they hosted in 2014, hasn’t played consistently well and some weather has probably been a factor too.

Trent Shelton (2-2) will start in front of the TV cameras on Friday for the Mustangs. Despite missing time due to appendicitis, Shelton has been Cal Poly’s most consistent starter. The lefty has a 3.98 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 40.2 innings.

At 3-6 in Big West play, Cal Poly is tied for last place with UC Davis. The good news is that they are still only three games out of first place. The Dirtbags are 16-21 overall and 3-3 early in conference play.

For their part, Cal Poly has put together a smart marketing campaign to ramp up to the game.

I wouldn’t expect a sellout or anything close. Capacity is over 3,000 at Baggett and Friday night’s forecast says that it will likely be under 50 degrees at first pitch. But the marketing department at Cal Poly Athletics is certainly doing everything they can to hustle more people for the TV game.

While bleachers were renovated prior to the season, the clubhouse facility is scheduled to be demolished and rebuilt as well. Construction is likely to last through next season.

It’s a super unusual circumstance, but periodically I’m really impressed with something someone writes on a message board. Last night, I read something on a Cal Poly football message board that struck me as exceptional — something others needed to see.

I requested, and received permission to re-purpose a post by Nick Wynne. He initially titled it, “Misdirection: A Play in Three Acts.”  Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Cal Poly’s triple option offense was dominant against Southern Utah and has really been running on all cylinders for the past month or so. Weber State coaches surely watched game film and took some chances. Here’s how it went down: (OM)

Prologue:

Cal Poly is driving down the field to end the first half vs. Weber State, down 14-10. Thus far, the running game has been somewhat stagnant, as the Wildcats are swarming to the ball. Poly faces a 3rd and 4 from the WSU 11 with 33 seconds left. Offensive coordinator Saga Tuitele calls in a relatively simple play action pass.
20i9yjc.jpg
Go to 2:42 in the highlight video above. The player circled above is Weber State Linebacker, #44 Emmett Tela. Tela’s assignment on this play is Kori Garcia, in the right slotback postion. As the ball is snapped, Brandon Howe fakes a straight fullback dive (not even the option kind). In truth, it’s not a great play fake — Chris Brown doesn’t turn the right way — but it’s still enough to completely fool Tela, who bites up to tackle Howe. Meanwhile, Garcia slips through the line to the left flat. By the time Tela realizes his mistake…
2qbr49j.jpg
Yup…probably not going to get there. Up in the coaches box, Saga strokes his chin and says “Hmm….

Act 1:

11 minutes into the 3rd quarter, Poly is continuing to have difficulties on the ground due to the Wildcats’ over-pursuing the play. On their first drive of the second half, Brown fumbles an option pitch to Howe in the face of overwhelming Wildcat pressure. On the opening play of the second drive…
2lcskro.jpg
Go to 3:12 of the video. Circled above is WSU safety #23 Trevon Johnson. The Wildcats have brought him up to the box to try and stop the Poly run game, and on this play, Johnson has weak-side responsibility. The play looks like a routine triple option towards the boundary. Instead of maintaining his assignment, Johnson dashes toward the right sideline in hopes of cutting off the play. By the time he realizes what’s happening…
2147gno.jpg
…it’s too late. Poor dude even trips over his own feet trying to reverse course, and then when he finally gets to Jackson, misses the tackle.

Act II:

Unfortunately for Cal Poly, the previous drive is cut short by more Wildcat pressure, this time in the form of a sack. Facing a 3rd and 4 on the next drive, Saga decides to once again see if he can catch Weber cheating.
124bwhe.jpg
Go to 3:57 in the video. This time the safety with weak-side responsibility is #32 Jawian Harrison. Poly shows play-action off of a simple power O hand-off. Harrison…well, to be honest, I’m not quite sure what Harrison is doing. He goes with Austin Albison, who is lined up in the wing, despite the fact that two other Wildcats pick up the receiver. Maybe he remembered from film session that Poly ran a similar play to Albison for 28 yards vs Portland State, and went to the big TE for a touchdown two weeks ago vs SUU? Either way, he once again leaves the weak side completely open…
1zexlwy.jpg
I would have circled him in this picture, but dude’s not even in the frame. Those poor offensive linemen have no one to block! Harrison does end up making the tackle, but it’s 46 yards down the field.

Act III:

Three plays later, Poly faces a 3rd and 4 from the WSU 23, after a couple of runs are stuffed by more over-pursuit. Time to go back to the “bag of tricks”.
b5i4n9.jpg
Go to 4:25 of the video. This time, it’s WSU linebacker, #11 Luke King with the weakside responsibility (give Weber credit — they showed Poly a lot of different looks in terms of personnel). Maybe the first tip-off for the defense should have been the formation — I can hardly recall Poly running anything out of a bunch right. That just screams gimmick. Anyway, it’s a power sweep right, surprise surprise, and Mr. King sees a huge 3rd down stop in his future…
v8lr1x.jpg
Uh oh. Seriously, even if you haven’t been following along with the video (and honestly, at this point, I’ll be happy if any of you are still reading this long post) you should at least go to 4:30 and watch poor Luke trot after Chris Brown, knowing full well that he blew his assignment. The sadness is almost palpable — I want to set it to that song from Charlie Brown Christmas.
So, the tl:dr summary is: WSU cheated up to stop the run with a safety. They also over-pursued plays, hoping to limit Poly’s ability to get to the corner. Largely, they were successful in this scheme, but when Saga and/or Tim Walsh realized this, they went to their reserve of misdirection plays, burning the Wildcats, and securing the victory for Poly. As Walsh said this week: “There were reasons to run those plays…against Weber State, and they were obviously fairly successful.”

Big West Tournament Cal Poly vs. UCR Blog http://www.fansmanship.com/big-west-tournament-game-blog/ http://www.fansmanship.com/big-west-tournament-game-blog/#respond Fri, 09 Mar 2012 02:15:39 +0000 http://www.fansmanship.com/?p=5117 10:10

It looks like the Mustangs have pulled this one out. In doing so, they’ve won their second Big West Conference Tournament game under Joe Callero and avenged last year’s heartbreaking first-round loss to UC Riverside.

Because UC Irvine beat Cal State Fullerton tonight (remember, the Big West Tournament is re-seeded after the first round), the Mustangs will face rival UC Santa Barbara tomorrow night. The Mustangs have failed to beat the Gauchos in each of the past two seasons, but the cliche stands here — in the postseason you can throw out the records.

Three things stand out for me in this game –

1) Jordan Lewis’ all-around game as he continues to be a part of the starting lineup. Lewis scored seven points and grabbed two rebounds while moving the ball and playing solid defense. The move to put Lewis back in the starting lineup seems to have been a very good one for Coach Callero.

2) Cal Poly shot 18-20 (90%) from the free throw line. For a team that has struggled at times from the free throw line, the Mustangs netted one of their best free-throw efforts of the season.

3) Amaurys Fermin finally had the kind of big game in a difficult situation that Callero has been waiting for all season. With 16 points, 4 assists, and 4 rebounds, Fermin played the kind of solid game that has eluded him at times during this conference season.

Tonight, Musty survived and advanced. Tomorrow, a renewal of the Blue-Green Rivalry is in store. It should be a good one.

* Look for pictures from this game and others from the Honda Center over the next day or so.

9:52

I keep waiting for UC Riverside’s run. And it hasn’t come yet. 55-46 Cal Poly with about 5:30 left. If Royer keeps jacking up 3’s, the Highlanders will be glad. Again, I’m not surprised that it’s been a total team effort for Cal Poly, but I am a little surprised about the fact that it’s clicking so well. Also, I’m surprised that the Mustangs are 14-16 from the charity stripe.

9:35

Was I wrong about balance? Was I mistaken when I said the Mustangs would need a starter to score more than 15 in order to win?

Cal Poly has built a 6-point lead with very balanced scoring. Three players with 8 points apiece and one with 7. The question will be who gets to take a big shot at the end and can that player knock it down? I hate that basketball so often comes down to that, but it does, especially in a one-and-done situation.

9:25

Fermin comes out with a few quick buckets in the second half. I’ve been saying all year he’s gotta get more points. He needs to be a more Lorenzo Keeler-type scorer I think for the Mustangs to have postseason success. I’ll put it this way — if he scores more than 12 or 13 points in the game, it favors the Mustangs.

9:20

Tom Barket just told me that Cal Poly is 2-12 this season when they trail at halftime. Here we go!

9:06

D D D D-Fence. Cal Poly has a track record of giving up a high shooting percentage to opponents this season and the issue seems to have reared its ugly head at the end of the first half. Riverside is shooting 51.9 percent from the field in the first half and I’m sure Coach Callero has to be focused on defensive strategery during halftime. It will be interesting to see what adjustments both teams come out with. #notomorrow…

9:04

Did I speak too soon? I thought both teams would go in at halftime within a few points, but UCR has begun to extend their lead. Six point lead for the Highlanders and Cal Poly already has 5 turnovers.

8:57

Seems like both teams are fighting in a good game here. Both squads are doing everything they can to get into halftime at this point it seems. Also, Phil Martin is a beast. The Mustangs held him down at Mott Gym a few weeks ago, but he’ll get his tonight.

8:45

Chris Eversley has come off the bench and provided instant offense all year. Mustangs fans should be excited about getting to see him play for two more seasons. He has 6 points in 6 minutes so far tonight…

8:35

We have a Maliik Love sighting! Love, who has sat at the end of the bench recently is in the game early-on — ahead of Kyle Odister. Callero has played 9 players during the first 7 1/2 minutes of the game.

8:31

When Cal Poly has started slow, it’s been really hard for them to reverse the early trend this season. Not a good start from the field for the Mustangs (2-9).

8:25

It seems as though none of the Mustangs seniors have had a huge individual performance this year in a really big game. David Hanson hit his first 3-pointer and Will Taylor scored a bucket already. Will it take a 15-plus point performance from one of the Mustangs starters if they are going to have a shot? I think maybe it will.

8:19

We have received confirmation about our photographers. Word is that the Cal Poly Cheerleaders are the winners of the “Spirit” award. Also, Will reports that the band is “pretty great.” Sounds like CP is well-represented.

Jordan Lewis will start tonight for Cal Poly. After going through just about the whole team in that 5th starting spot, Joe Callero has settled on the senior from San Rafael to stabilize the roster. Four seniors and one junior starting bodes well.

If the Mustangs win tonight, they would play UCSB tomorrow night since the tournament is re-seeded after the first round.

8:09 Pacific Time –

Fansmanship.com supposedly will have TWO photographers working the game tonight so there should be some good photos by tomorrow or so… Friend of Fansmanship and photographer Bryce Ashland was my roommate in college and will be a featured part of an upcoming baseball road trip saga that we will post in at least four parts. The first part will likely come out next week.

Photographer Will Parris (http://www.parris-studios.com/) is a fantastic photographer in the Orange County area. He shoots sports for Fansmanship.com, but he takes pictures of all kinds of things, including my wedding. I can’t recommend him highly enough.

Thanks to both Bryce and Will for their taking pictures for fansmanship tonight.

The last time they were at a game together, Cal Poly was blown out by Fullerton. Mustang fans hope they bring a different mojo this time around…

Tonight I’ll be blogging in an “old school” pre-twitter way that sees me updating the post here each time (Most Recent Comments on Top).

If you are a Cal Poly fan in the mean time, you can check out this game of “Musty” that Cal Poly Media Relations superstar Chris Giovanetti showed me today. It’s not a game of “horse.” On the eve of the Big West Tournament’s first round, it’s a game of “Musty.”

Will Taylor vs. Chris Eversley. Check it out
