Bill Grundler is a lot of things. A former Cal Poly wrestler who has been a teacher, wrestling coach, and firefighter, Grundler is now a CrossFit Games analyst and co-owner of CrossFit Inferno in San Luis Obispo.

As the popularity of CrossFit has grown, Grundler has both competed at high levels of the CrossFit open and commented on the Games themselves.

As someone who has worked-out at Inferno for the past four months or so, I sat down with Grundler to talk about how he got into CrossFit, the difference between what workouts people do on a daily basis and the Games, and building the the bonds that may make CrossFit seem like some kind of a cult to outsiders.

Bill is super personable and friendly, which makes it easy to see why he is a natural choice to be on television during the CrossFit Games.

That said some of the questions I had for him were probably as awkward as me trying to climb a rope or do a hand-stand push-up. Here’s hoping you enjoy the conversation anyway.

In their final home wrestling meet of the season, Cal Poly fell to Cal State Bakersfield 29-13. Cal Poly got wins from Nick Fiegner, Colton Schilling, and Colt Shorts, but couldn’t overcome the power of Bakersfield as the Roadrunners pulled away.

The dual meet between two Pac 12 opponents was Cal Poly’s second outdoor meet of the season. While they have struggled this year, fans lined the University Union plaza to watch the festivities, which included the cheerleaders, pep band, and dance team.

The Mustangs will finish their season with meets over the next few weeks at Boise State, Oregon State, Grand Canyon, and Arizona State.

Facing a sizeable deficit in Friday afternoon’s outdoor dual meet with Northern Colorado, the Cal Poly wrestling team fell just short, losing the dual meet 23-22.

The match was seen by hundreds of students and spectators who lined the University Union steps to watch. Cheerleaders and the pep band also provided an environment that everyday wrestling fans might not be as accustomed to.

The meet was just the second ever outdoor meet for the Cal Poly program, having wrestled under the sun last season against Oregon State.

With the loss to Northern Colorado, the Mustangs fell to 0-4 in dual meets this season.

Cal Poly will once again host an outdoor meet on January 29 against Cal State Bakersfield, also in the UU.

Is there actually anything going on here tonight? Walking into Mott Gym on Friday night, the lights were dark, save for a single spotlight, hanging down from the center of the curved old-school aircraft carrier-style ceiling.

The spotlight illuminates the center of a wrestling mat, shrouding the stands and basically everything else in the gym in darkness.

In some wrestling arenas, the spotlight brings a rowdy, loud fan base. In Mott Gym, it was almost eerily quiet. It’s an atmosphere I think people could get into, especially if it was a little rowdier. Definitely nothing really like it in sports.

Not knowing anything about wrestling, the scoring of wrestling, or even who was doing really well at any one time, a recap can be found here.
