On Friday, the Cal Poly football team was the first to see their new duds. Videos throughout Cal Poly social media accounts showed three new uniform options for the Mustangs — all bearing the new adidas logo and design.

Uniforms with green jerseys were matched with white pants, while white was matched with gold pants. Black jerseys are paired with black pants.

The green helmets seem to have a CP on each side — a recognizable look. If you expected three stripes down each leg, you’ll be out of luck. But the white helmets do have a little design swerve to them. The CP on the left side of the helmet is adorned with the stars and stripes in red, white, and blue.

A patriotic look has been popular in many sports (see alternate baseball caps) in recent memory, but putting it on helmets is a pretty big commitment for years to come.

The jersey pant combinations are all right. My favorite is the green top with white bottoms. I really enjoyed the all-green uniform combinations they’ve sported in recent years too.

For reference, here’s a look at the old green/white combo:

For me, white jerseys and gold pants was probably the weakest of the design looks. For my taste, I like an all-matching top and bottom or something with distinct contrast. The gold pants would probably look better with the green than white and the white bottoms with the white could also be really crisp.

The only other criticism I’d have is that on the inside of the 10 (see the first photo of defensive #10 RJ Mazolewski above) is gold. It could make distinguishing a number 10 from, say, 18, a little tough from the press box.

Other than that, these new unis are great. The “netting” texture on the green jerseys is really great and will probably be really good for my camera when it tries to focus.

Cal Poly fall sports had to scramble more than others to get their kits designed and produced in a very short amount of time. Even without that, these combinations look good and, given their time limits, they did a great job.

What color combination do you think they’ll sport on Saturday at home against Colgate. I’m thinking it will be Green tops and white or gold pants.

The Gold Uniforms Looked Good http://www.fansmanship.com/the-gold-uniforms-looked-good/ http://www.fansmanship.com/the-gold-uniforms-looked-good/#respond Sun, 21 Oct 2012 18:11:01 +0000 http://www.fansmanship.com/?p=6772

After the Big Sky informed Cal Poly that the all-white uniforms they wore at Weber State (with gold trim) wouldn’t be allowed anymore, the Mustangs rolled-out a gold uniform for the first time at home.

I’m not fashion expert, but I thought they looked sharp. On the podcast earlier in the week, I talked to JD Scroggin about whether he thought it would be possible at home. We both thought that it probably looked too close to a visiting team’s white uniform to make it work, but they did it. In the future, perhaps they should request that the visitors wear a darker color to make the difference stand-out more.

Unlike the white uniforms, the all-golds had sharp and easy-to-read green numbers.

The two games that Cal Poly has won in the golds this year have been among their closest of the season. While they won that game 35-17, they were actually losing 17-14 in the fourth quarter before reeling off 21 straight points to make the final margin much larger than the game actually was.

On Saturday, with Cal Poly donning the golds again, Portland State used some Cal Poly miscues to go ahead 25-20 in the third quarter. Much like the North Dakota game, the Mustangs rallied late to score the final 17 points, winning the game by 12, 37-25.

Cal Poly has played a lot more close games than their dominant 7-0 record indicates. Sometimes the difference between a good season and a great season is the ability to consistently do the things they need to do in close games. And closing close games has not been an issue for Cal Poly.
