David Dineen was a walk-on at Cal Poly chasing his Division I dream in 1994-95. By Owen Main

Cal Poly’s first Division I men’s basketball team was historically bad. That didn’t stop Joe Callero and the current Mustangs team from honoring eight of the nine players who finished the season along with an assistant coach in-person over the past weekend.

The point guard on that team, David Dineen, has kind of become the unofficial spokesperson for the group. At a dinner honoring his squad from 20 years ago on Friday night, Dineen and his teammates spoke of past stories and imparted whatever wisdom they have on people in attendance, including players on the current roster.

Sitting there, I wished I had simply put my recorder on the podium. That would have been a wonderful audio post by itself.

To try to recapture some of that magic, I sat-down with Dineen before shoot-around on Saturday. Currently a counselor at UNLV, Dineen talked to me just seconds after setting-foot in Mott Athletics Center for the first time in over a decade. His old teammates were putting up jumpers as we talked, so sorry for the bouncing balls in the background. Hope you enjoy our conversation.
